SONIC SUGGESTIONS: Yann Tiersen • Broken Social Scene

Oh, sweet February. Love is in the air, Cupid is floating around shooting unsuspecting victims with love laden arrows. We scramble in ditched last minute efforts to find a box of convenient store chocolates and a rose to show that special someone just how much we care. Not this year friends. I’m going to let you in on a little secret. We’re going to think outside the Hallmark card and box of mystery candies. This month is rich with concert goodness here in Orlando and a pair of tickets to any of these shows is sure to impress even the most difficult of Valentines.

That 1 Guy
The Social
Friday, 4th
9 P.M
$10

You know, the one guy who plays that metal pipe contraption. Also known as Mike Silverman, hailing from Las Vegas, Nevada and worked his way to garnering a cult following across the United States and Australia. His claim to fame being a a 7 foot tall instrument he created and appropriately named, The Magic Pipe. Still not ringing a bell? It’s time you take notice of this musical mastermind as he brings his one-man band through our fair city once again. Prepare to collect your jaws from the floor as That 1 Guy amazes his audience while plucking, slapping, beating, and bowing The Magic Pipe into a high energy production unlike anything you’ve seen before. Just when you think things cant ger possible more astounding he pulls out the Magic Pipes kid brothers The Magic Boot and The Magic Saw. (Yes, that’s the same saw we adored on Tom Waits album, Orphans.) Add to all that Silvermans incredible beatboxing and vocal styling and you’ve got yourself a blown mind. His music has been featured on Showtime’s hit series ‘Weeds’ and he is currently touring to support his latest effort, Packs A Wallop.

The Protomen with Random
Encounter (CD Release Show)
The Haven
Sunday, 27th
7 PM
$10

The Protomen will, no doubt, melt your faces off with a rock show rivaled by no other nerd rock band. They are, in fact, the heroes of the nerd community and are spreading their wings and claiming the hearts of rock fans nationwide. A production of stagemanship, theatrics, and good old fashioned rock music this show is, without a doubt, the bargain show of the month at a mere $10. Joining them in the Winter Park venue are friends and Russian natives (now local to central Florida) Random Encounter. Random Encounter will be using this opportunity to present to us their new album, Let Me Tell You A Story. The nerd-rock group stands out from the crowd by wooing us with a sweetly bellowing accordion.

Broken Social Scene
Sunday 13th
Firestone Live!
$25

The revolving door of musicians that make up the Canadian indie rock sensation, Broken Social Scene, piles up into an seemingly endless list of names. Broken Social Scenes notorious for having a revolving door of guest musicians come and go. Despite the lack of a consistent lineup, you can bet the rent that whoever does happen to be in the band at the time is going to deliver. Their beautifully composed, sometimes sweet, sometimes heavy catalog of songs are always faultlessly performed. Reaching number 1 on Canadian Rock Charts, their 4th studio album, Forgiveness Rock Record, features a rich lineup, including guest appearances from notable musicians such as members of Metric, Pavement, as well as Death From Above 1979.

Yann Tiersen with S. Carey
Tuesday February 8th
The Social
7 PM
$20-$23

Gentlemen, if you really want to show your lady friend what a thoughtful and true romantic you really are underneath that ragged manly exterior, I highly recommend getting a pair of tickets to this show as an early Valentines day gift to both of you. It’s a well observed fact that everything about France is romantic, the language, the skyline, the food, this writer can go on and on. The classically trained French composer/musician, Yann Tiersen is no exception. Tiersen’s closet of instruments ranges far and wide. His music is heavily based  on the violin and often supported with melodicas, typewriters, and toy pianos, a repertoire sure to keep even the true rock fan entertained if not completely wooed. Tiersen has embarked on a North American tour in support of his critically acclaimed sixth studio release titled Dust Lane.
